What the Federal Battery Rebate Is
The Federal Battery Rebate under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program is helping make home battery storage more affordable for Australian households.
The incentive is calculated per usable kilowatt hour and applied as an upfront discount rather than as a fixed payment. From 1 May 2026, the rate will decrease from roughly $311 per usable kWh to around $252 per usable kWh and will move to a bi annual reduction model with tiered, lower payments for larger systems. This means the rebate amount depends on your battery size and when you install.
Eligible homeowners can receive a substantial reduction in upfront costs when adding a battery to an existing solar system or installing a complete solar and battery package. The program is designed to increase energy independence and reduce pressure on the grid, particularly during evening peak demand periods.
